Course Description This course is aimed at students with little or no prior knowledge of the language who would like to attain a basic ability in Chinese for tourism, work visits to China or to converse with Chinese friends. The course provides a structured approach to the incremental development of Chinese language skills. Topic areas covered include greetings, numbers: age and currency; weather; ordering food; purchasing tickets; asking for directions. While the focus is on spoken Chinese, the course also introduces pinyin – the standard system of Romanized spelling for transliterating Chinese, and gives a basic introduction to recognising written Chinese characters. It builds on the language skills acquired in Chinese Beginners’ I. Topic areas covered by the course tourism, daily routines, the world of work, shopping, planning social activities and celebrations. The course encourages students to start writing basic Chinese characters, while maintaining comprehension through the use of pinyin. The preparation courses give students the chance to practice past papers, and key grammar points are revised. Topic areas covered by the course making plans for leisure activities, health, sport and culture daily life. Reflecting the greater demands of language learning at this level, weekly homework is set and the use of vocabulary building apps is encouraged. The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 3 (optional) Intermediate Chinese I starts in October at the Confucius Institute, UWTSD Business Campus, Swansea. Survival Chinese is an online ten-week introductory course taught through the medium of Welsh. Survival Chinese is also available as in person course taught through the medium of English.
