Course Description

This course is aimed at students with little or no prior knowledge of the language who would like to attain a basic ability in Chinese for tourism, work visits to China or to converse with Chinese friends. The course provides a structured approach to the incremental development of Chinese language skills.

Topic areas covered include greetings, numbers: age and currency; weather; ordering food; purchasing tickets; asking for directions. While the focus is on spoken Chinese, the course also introduces pinyin – the standard system of Romanized spelling for transliterating Chinese, and gives a basic introduction to recognising written Chinese characters.

The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 1 (optional)
