Course Description

This course is aimed at students with little or no prior knowledge of the language who would like to attain a basic ability in Chinese for tourism, work visits to China or to converse with Chinese friends. The course provides a structured approach to the incremental development of Chinese language skills.

Topic areas covered include greetings, numbers: age and currency; weather; ordering food; purchasing tickets; asking for directions. While the focus is on spoken Chinese, the course also introduces pinyin – the standard system of Romanized spelling for transliterating Chinese, and gives a basic introduction to recognising written Chinese characters.

The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 1 (optional)

Course Description

This course is aimed at students who have a basic knowledge of Chinese and who would like to expand their vocabulary, grammar and topic areas for conversation while improving their comprehension of basic written Chinese. It builds on the language skills acquired in Chinese Beginners’ I.

Topic areas covered by the course tourism, daily routines, the world of work, shopping, planning social activities and celebrations. The course encourages students to start writing basic Chinese characters, while maintaining comprehension through the use of pinyin.

The course leads to the Chinese Proficiency Test HSK 2 (optional)

The Confucius Institute offers twice yearly short preparation courses for HSK test candidates.  The preparation courses give students the chance to practice past papers, and key grammar points are revised.  Students also work on developing a thorough knowledge of the vocabulary required for their HSK level.

An introductory course to Chinese calligraphy and Tang poetry

 

Description

 

4-week course, one hour per week

Course dates: Fridays, 24 February to 17 March

Time: 13:00 – 14:00

Online – with an option to meet at the end of the course to practice calligraphy as a group

 

  • Study three original poems by some of the most famous Chinese poets from the Tang dynasty, namely, Wang Wei (699-761), Li Bai (701-762) and Du Fu (712-770)
  • Discover classical Chinese vocabulary and equivalent characters in modern Chinese
  • Compare different versions of English translations of these poems
  • Discuss the poetic forms and implications of the poems
  • Master and practise basic calligraphy skills
  • Create your own calligraphy artwork
